The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
